Cleanup Day at the Water Works Museum!

Come help us make Shreveport’s Victorian treasure shine again! The 1887 plant wasn’t retired from active service until 1984, making it the longest-running steam-powered water plant in the U.S. 1994 may be the last time the cool, Steampunk-ish machinery got a good spit n’ polish! WE PLAN TO CHANGE THAT ON SEPT. 23! It’s time to sweep, wash, scrub, de-cobweb and polish some brass! Imagine the bragging rights you will have after this! You will get up close and personal with 100-year old equipment, see the undergarments of a real Victorian citizen, and fondle some brass….uh…parts and stuff. The...

Downtown History Tours

Each one of the buildings and spaces in Downtown Shreveport has stories to tell. More than 180 years old, downtown has lived through it all – war(s),  economic collapse, a legal Red Light District, gunfights in the streets, Yellow Fever, railroad wealth, oil and gas millions, Huddie Ledbetter, Howard Hughes, Elvis Presley. Our tales are big and bold, writ large by people who were unwilling to take no for an answer and whose decisions were incredibly wise and unreasonably idiotic. They are no longer around to speak for themselves, so we now do it for them. You owe it to yourself to explore our history of colorful women, shady men, business tycoons and balladeers, some of whom have apparently refused to shed the surly bonds of earth and remain to lend a little ‘spirit’ to various occasions. Downtown is proud to show off its past with a variety of talks and tours, and you’re always welcome to take part. Ogilvie Wiener Mansion Tours– Tours of the work happening at the beautiful Queen Anne Ogilview Wiener Mansion are each Saturday and Sunday, 4-6 pm. Wear light clothing and comfy shoes, there is no air conditioning and stair climbing will be required. The beautiful home is located in the city’s first subdivision. The owner and builder, William Burwell Ogilvie, did not get to enjoy it long. The Ogilvie mansion was built in...

September Downtown Artwalk

September’s Artwalk is already being planned and we’ll be sharing all the details soon! We return to the East Zone, which includes great stops like Norsworthy Gallery, Bon Temps Coffee Bar, Fully Stacked, and Remington Suite Hotel & Spa, among others. This month, we will welcome three NEW stops to the monthly artwalk: the downtown branch of the Shreve Memorial Library (424 Texas Street), the lobby of Chase Tower (400 Texas Street) and Artipsy (Red River District). These new stops will combine with our older favorites to make for a very special night. What is artwalk? Well, it’s a free, all-ages-friendly event that encourages folks to explore a section of our beautiful & historic downtown, that on this night is filled with art and artists and special fun events. Businesses throw open their doors to show off their space AND you get to meet some of our amazingly talented citizens. On any given month, you might see the works of: painters, sculptors, wood workers, fabric and jewelry makes, airbrush artists, photographers, potters and more. Downtown is nothing if not eclectic! One of the really fun events that is scheduled during the East Zone tour is called Art Live.  This is an event that pits three of four artists against each other and the clock. They are giving a general theme but nothing else, and during the course of the...
