More Fest Details
In 1873, more than 700 Yellow Fever victims were interred in a giant communal grave in downtown’s Oakland Cemetery. History tells us “five black men who seemed immune to the Yellow Jack dug the grave and tossed in the bodies,” then covered them with broken shards of pottery and earth. Years later, an oak tree grew above. Dig into the dirt around those tree roots and you will find small pieces of Victorian pottery, bone shards and the occasional tooth. Would you expect to hear muted voices under that tree?
Downtown residents report strange happenings. Forks fly out of cutlery bins and across the room. A door knock in an empty building is answered. Rooms turn ice cold on hot days… and always there is the feeling that someone is watching.
During the three days of Louisiana’s Weirder Side, Downtown’s Paranormal Fest, you’ll be given history about the places and spaces of downtown Shreveport, you’ll be educated and entertained, you’ll have the opportunity to take part in some spirited discussions. It is not our intention to make you believe that ghosts exist, but to give you an outlet for conversation and deeper thought. After all, who are we to say who lives, who dies and who stays behind?
