The Family That Codes Together: Coding Together In Scratch

Hosted by OreMi Technologies and Solutions, North Louisiana STEM Alliance, The Family That Codes Together, and Cohab

Do you ever watch your kids interact with online and mobile games (or YouTube videos of other people playing digital games) and think, “I wish she was doing something more productive.”? What if he could be learning skills he’ll carry with him throughout his entire life while he plays? What if you could learn with her, so when she has questions you have answers?

The Family That Codes Together… is a unique learning opportunity for children and guardians (over the age of 18) to learn the principles of coding together using The Massachusetts Institute for Technology Media Lab’s platform, SCRATCH.

Ideal for ages 8 – 12, Scratch is a drag-and-drop programming platform that lets you create your own interactive stories, games, and animations — and share your creations with others in the online community.

Scratch helps young people and parents learn to think creatively, reason systematically, and work collaboratively — essential skills for life in the 21st century.

If you’ve ever been interested in programming, if your child has ever shown interest in making their own animations or games, if you’ve ever felt intimidated because when your child has questions about what they’re learning, you won’t know how to help, THIS is the course for you and your child.

Our class will meet on Saturdays from 3:30 p.m. – 5 p.m. at Cohab in Shreveport’s Red River District (right across from the new Shrevepor Aquarium) for five sessions. We will meet every Saturday EXCEPT Saturday, Nov. 25th. Class dates are as follows:

Saturday, 11/11 – Class One
Saturday 11/18 – Class Two
Saturday 11/25 – OFF
Saturday 12/2 – Class Three
Saturday 12/9 – Class Four
Saturday 12/16 – Final Class and Family Show and Tell Day (and holiday party!)

Please note EVERY CHILD MUST HAVE A GUARDIAN (over the age of 18) PARTICIPATING IN THE CLASS WITH THEM. Families with multiple children may register up to two children for every guardian (i.e. you can have one parent with two siblings participating). Sibling discounts are available.

Scholarships are also available. If you are interested in a scholarship, please use the scholarship registration above and we will send you an application.

Please note seating for this class is EXTREMELY limited, so register quickly. Laptops are required, but we do have a limited number of laptops for rent if you need one. If you would like to rent a laptop, please select the registration plus laptop rental option above. A credit card is required for laptop rentals.
Why Programming?

“It has become commonplace to refer to young people as “digital natives” due to their apparent fluency with digital technologies.Indeed, many young people are very comfortable sending text messages, playing online games, and browsing the Web. But does that really make them fluent with new technologies?… As we see it, digital fluency requires not just the ability to chat, browse, and interact but also the ability to design, create, and invent with new media. To do so, you need to learn some type of programming.

Coding greatly expands the range of what you can create (and how you can express yourself) with the computer. It also expands the range of what you can learn. In particular, programming supports “computational thinking,” helping you learn important problem-solving and design strategies (such as modularization and iterative design) that carry over to non-programming domains.” ~ Scratch: Programming For All.
