This empowering evening event will focus on building awareness and raising critically-needed funds to support research and education initiatives in the fight against heart disease and stroke. Writer, director, filmmaker, friend, Rob Smat, will tell his compelling personal story and share with us highlights from his movie, “The Last Whistle”. Smat based this film on his own experiences playing high school football: “Players would collapse at area schools every season. It was always alarming, because e never knew why it happened, except that it usually wasn’t something that could be protected with helmets and pads like other injuries.” This fear fueled Smat to write the script based on something that’s so rare, yet widespread. Unrecognized cardiovascular disorders, such as Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) which can be associated with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HC) are conditions that affect young athletes across all sports and result in the death of a young person every three days in the United States. The filmmakers collaborated with the American Heart Association in the making of the film.
Go Red for Women will continue as the cornerstone event of the Go Red for Women movement in NW Louisiana.
