Background of Reveillon Dinners

In French, New Orleans’ original language, the word “reveillon” means “awakening.” The Creoles, some of the city’s earliest inhabitants, celebrated the start of Christmas in the early 1800s, with a big family meal when they returned home from midnight mass. It was a tradition the Creoles inherited from their European cousins as a way of breaking the daylong religious fast leading up to Christmas Eve.

Today, the Reveillon tradition still continues in New Orleans but with a few modifications. Instead of family dinners at home, the city’s top-tier restaurants offer extravagant Reveillon Dinners with menus inspired by those enjoyed by the Creole families, at more conventional dining times.

We are pleased to be the first to bring this delightful tradition to Shreveport area in hopes it will inspire more restaurants to do the same during the holiday season.
