Editing our Evolution Public Forum

Join us in a forum-style event based around human genome editing,
July 21 at Sci-Port Discovery Center.

As gene editing techniques become more refined, the possibility of editing the human genome is moving from science fiction to reality. What should we do with this power? Should we create babies who will never know disease? Should we eliminate mutations that increase the likelihood of certain cancers? Should parents be able to choose their future child’s eye color?

Many in the scientific community are calling for strict regulations on the use of this technology, while others are excited about the possibilities. The National Science Foundation is funding this forum to collect input from the general public, through round-table discussions.

Local experts will help provide audience members with background information on the technologies making it possible to rewrite our species’ genetic code, but this forum is more about your voice than theirs.

The event will happen at Sci-Port Discovery Center on July 21 from 7 – 9 pm, with doors opening at 6:30.

This forum is better suited for people 16 and over. Light refreshments will be provided, and pre-registration is strongly encouraged. E-mail Alan Brown, Director of Education at abrown@sciport.org to reserve your seat or for further information.
