The Spring Equinox marks the shift in the season. In the Northern Hemisphere it represents new light, life and beginnings and marks a point on the calendar when day and night are in perfect balance.
Throughout the world, at approximately 4:24 p.m. Central Daylight Time, on March 20th both hemispheres of the earth receive the light of the sun equally. What a wonderful time to focus on balance as we align ourselves energetically with the budding energy of spring and come out from under the fog of winter!
First we will prepare the mind and body with nadi shodhana pranayama (translated as “subtle energy clearing breathing technique”). This cleansing breath, also called “alternate nostril breathing,” involves inhaling and exhaling through one nostril at a time. In addition to opening the flow of energy along the nadis (the energy channels within us), this practice calms, purifies, and strengthens the nervous system and deepens self-awareness. It is excellent preparation for the yin/yang yoga flows and meditation that follow.
Expect the asana practice to be based on moon and sun salutations, moving slowly through Chandra Namaskar at first to ground and center and finally Surya Namaskar to warm and energize. Several mudras will be taught along the way. Yoga Mudras are specific hand gestures created to facilitate the flow of energy (Prana) through the body and mind for optimal health. Since hands contain all the acupuncture meridians and are considered to be the control panel of the body, incorporating Yoga Mudra is a powerful tool to bring our energy bodies even further toward perfect alignment and balance.
Finally, we will cultivate stillness and rest inside awareness during Savasana. The guided meditation which follows will create a subtle mood of happiness and contentment. Much like the memory of having witnessed a beautiful sunrise or sunset, this meditation will infuse our consciousness with reassurance, optimism, and good cheer.
