Rachael (Keira Knightley) arrives in the post-war ruins of Hamburg to reunite with her husband (Jason Clarke), a British colonel charged with rebuilding the city. Rachael is stunned to discover that they will be sharing their new house with its previous owners, a German widower (Alexander Skarsgård) and his troubled daughter.
