The monument commemorates the service and sacrifice of Lieutenant Commander Jonas B. Kelsall, 32, and Chief Petty Officer Robert J. Reeves, 32, who were among 30 servicemen supporting Operation Enduring Freedom in the province of Wardak in Afghanistan who died when their CH-47 Chinook helicopter crashed as a result of an Afghan insurgents’ attack in August of 2011. Kelsall and Reeves were a part of SEAL Team 6, which is known for its involvement for the finding and killing of Osama bin Laden in Pakistan on May 2, 2011.
