Inspiration can come from many places. The ladies of the Art Quilt Group in the Red River Quilters group found theirs in a photo they saw on the DDA Facebook page. They fell in love with the image and thought it would be an excellent choice for their “Slice Quilt Challenge”. They enlarged the image of Downtown Shreveport, cut it into 8 “slices” and gave it to eight of the quilting groups teams. If you are wondering if this was a quick project for them, it was not. Two years of dedication, finger pricks, blood, sweat and tears went into their latest creation. Finally, the eight panels were then sewn together to create a beautiful work of art. The panels were made by different teams with no input from the others, but the final collaboration is breathtaking.
This mixed media artwork included fibers, fabrics, threads, paints, ribbons, vinyl, and other notions. The artists who worked on this project were: Kelly Pugh, Ronda Smyth, Mary Sewell, Delphia Matthews, Margie Lantz, Susan Orjias, Lynda Britton, Lisa McGuire, Anita Goodson, Charlene Carver, Lana Deville and Sandy Jones. Logistics support and muslin for the backing provided by Vickie Phelps. The overall quilting was completed by Kelly Pugh and finally Mary Sewell stitched the faced binding for this showstopping quilt.

The incredibly beautiful Slice Quilt of Downtown Shreveport – currently unnamed – by the Red River Quilters Art Quilt Group
The Red River Quilters formed their non-profit organization in March of 1983 to promote the appreciation and preservation of quilts, encourage the art of quilting, and foster charitable endeavors. They also provide a forum for quilters and quilt lovers to share their common interest in the art of quilting.
