SPD In Action: Addressing Homelessness and Safety in Downtown Shreveport
At our recent Downtown Town Hall, some business owners and residents expressed concern about the presence of homelessness and panhandling in the downtown area. These are complex challenges that can affect perceptions of safety in our downtown. The Downtown Development Authority shares those concerns and was excited to hear of a recent initiative.
The Shreveport Police Department, in collaboration with several local organizations, recently conducted a focused outreach to assist homeless veterans in our community. Partner agencies included CADA Mobile Crisis, the Veterans Affairs Office, Volunteers of America, Hope Connections, and others. Four teams canvassed downtown, Highland, and Stoner Hill, connecting with individuals to offer housing support, medical care, and mental health services.
This initiative was specific to veterans and was designed to engage individuals who need help. Rather than focusing on enforcement, the goal was to provide a direct link to services that can lead to long-term assistance. These kinds of proactive, service-oriented approaches are essential when addressing root causes rather than surface symptoms.
At the DDA, we understand the need for balance. We support efforts to keep downtown clean, accessible, and safe, while also recognizing that some individuals need more than enforcement—they need resources and a pathway forward. Efforts like this one reflect dual priority and show what can be accomplished when departments and service providers work together.
We appreciate the Shreveport Police Department’s continued responsiveness to the community and its willingness to collaborate with expert partners in the field. This is one of their several ongoing initiatives that signal a connected, solutions-driven approach to downtown safety and support services.
The DDA team will continue to listen to our downtown stakeholders and advocate for actions that support the long-term health of the district. Just like this collaborative effort – creating a thriving downtown requires partnership—from the public sector, the business community, and organizations.
