New Year’s Resolution be darned- downtown’s newest location for home-baked sweets is calling your name! The doors are open at Retro Baking Company at 500 Texas, a perfect location at the corner of Texas and Marshall adjacent to Government Plaza and the main branch of the Shreve Memorial Library and across from the Caddo Parish Courthouse. Co-owner and chef Kandie Winchester will do her dead-level best to entice you into taking a bite of something that you didn’t know you wanted, but then must have. She is working her magic on a variety of fruit-filled turnovers, sticky cinnamon rolls, pound cakes and other flavored cakes (her lemon lavender and Craft cake are favorites), cookies, artisan breads and buns and meat, egg and cheese- filled kolaches.
Her King Cakes, winner over cakes from all the local bakeries at a recent Mardi Gras blind taste contest, come in flavors like pecan praline, Creole cream cheese, strawberry, and blackberry. Hot organic coffee is a perfect accompaniment if you want to take five and enjoy your snack at one of the comfy tables in the bakery.
Kandie is already taking orders for wedding, birthday and specialty cakes, but will also be doing variety and cookie plates for home or office. Retro Baking Company hours are M-F, 7 am- 3 pm and Saturday, 9 am- 2 pm. Go by and check out all that is sweet and tasty.
