Great news from the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (LaDOTD)! They say pending any last minute issues, the Spring Street Bridge into downtown Shreveport should reopen to motorists Saturday, Aug. 22. This has been a challenging project that had to combine the needs of construction and rail traffic in a tight area.
Meanwhile, be aware that the city has closed the 100-block of Milam Street to through traffic to complete a long-needed sewer main replacement.
The city’s Department of Water and Sewer (DOWAS) understands the inconvenience the road closure causes and says they will be working with haste to get it done.
July 16, 2020 Update
The LaDOTD is anticipating four more weeks of construction before Spring Street is reopened into downtown. That means- hopefully- the third week or so in August. According to Public Information Officer Erin Buchanan, “The good news is that the contractor has made significant progress on the repairs. The 22 helical piles were installed last week. This week, we’re anticipating the first of the concrete pour for the footing. After that, a crash retaining wall will be constructed to help prevent any future train derailments from damaging the structure to this degree. The bridge columns will then be re-installed and the girders will be repaired. Following that, we’ll be able to remove the equipment on the bridge deck that’s holding it in place, and reopen the bridge to traffic.”
