sapphires

Robinson Film Center welcomes The Sapphires and To The Wonder to the big screen tonight. Director Terrence Malick (The Tree of Life, Badlands) immerses a first-rate cast – Ben Affleck, Olga Kurylenko, Rachel McAdams and Javier Bardem – into a drama that explores love, faith, fidelity and what it feels like to want something  you can’t define. The Sapphires are an Australian Aboriginal girls singing group who learn about love, friendship and war when their group entertains the US troops in Vietnam in 1968. Based just on the great trailer alone, Mail Monkey gives The Sapphires two thumbs up and double hoot!

Speaking of fun events, Louisiana’s Weirder Side: Paranormal Fest tickets are officially FOR SALE. The June 20-23 downtown Shreveport event features all things ghostly, ghastly and historic. From the Yellow Fever Mound at the Oakland Cemetery Creep to Haunted River Cruises to live Ghost Hunts (with YOU helping in the investigation), the $175 VIP Pass gets you a ticket to everything, a total of 13 events over three days. There are also opportunities to purchase tickets to special movies and other weekend events. We know one thing- these tickets will move at a ‘spirited’ clip and once they’re gone…well, R.I.P.

If you have a ghost story (true or not) or even a flair for the dramatic… then WE WANT YOU to enter the Paranormal Fest Ghost Storytelling Competition.  Grab your phone, record a video of yourself telling your story and upload it here.  Finals are LIVE on June23 at Paranormal Fest.

norla

Eat a great meal and help save an iconic shotgun house! The Norla Preservation Project is trying to save some historic shotgun houses abandoned and vacant for years behind the Shreveport Police Department. The houses are in various stages of terrible shape, but the goal is to move them somewhere else in the downtown district and rehab them for offices or retail. Today (and every Friday in May), Market 104 at the Shreveport Hilton will be donating a percentage of their sales to the project. When you eat, be sure to remind them that you support the Norla Preservation Project!

You can help again on Wednesday.  Stop by the Some Like It Hot Food Truck WEDNESDAY on the corner of Market and Milam (at the Phoenix Underground) and your lunch purchase will again benefit the Norla Preservation Project.

BE SURE TO THEM THEM YOU’RE DINING FOR NORLA!

Speaking of brewskis, did you know downtown Shreveport has it’s own beer? The Red River Brewing Company has a new home at 1010 Marshall. Their fermenters are in place…next in are the brew house and brite tank. The company plans to start selling its beer to the public no later than July, so stay tuned!
