Downtown’s 130-Year Old Celebrates With Food and Fun with Food Trucks at the Museum
The Shreveport Water Works Museum, 142 North Common Street, hosts the second Food Trucks at the Museum, Saturday, Nov. 18 from 11 am- 3 pm. The annual event features a variety of foods available for purchase, from Colombian and other South-of-the-Border specialties to Filipino Lumpia (egg rolls filled with meats or sweets), Southern fried seafood platters, smoky BBQ and ribtips, to hamburgers, corndogs and funnel cakes. All drink sales will benefit the ongoing efforts of the McNeill Street Pumping Station Preservation Society (the MSPSP, or ‘Friends’ of the Museum), in their effort to keep the doors to this beautiful and historical facility open.
It’s about more than food on Saturday, though! Tours of the Victorian-era water works are free and will be held each hour and half hour. You’ll be able to see 130-year-old equipment, and hear how the facility helped save downtown Shreveport from fire and disease and led to the growth of the city. You’ll also be told the remarkable fact that our water works was the longest-running steam-powered plant in the entire country, and how the Smithsonian has recognized some of the amazing equipment there. The Shreveport Railroad Museum that is located on the grounds will also be open.
Under the towering oak trees, vendors selling all types of local goods from custom art, jewelry, body lotions and home goods and purchase some tickets from the Museum Friends to try to win one (or more) lovely gifts! (The money from all tickets purchased goes into museum operations).
Live music will be provided by Joan Nerrittig and there will be opportunities to play guessing games and fun for children. The event is all-ages friendly.
Food Trucks at the Museum is sponsored by the Downtown Development Authority and the Downtown Shreveport Development Corporation, who love the museum and support the MSPSPS in their efforts to keep the museum open and vibrant.
PARKING: Parking is limited on the grounds of the Water Works, but there is ample parking on the service road just across North Common Street. Handicapped spaces are available on the grounds of the Water Works. A police officer will be guiding traffic at the museum entrance at 142 North Common.
