Anthony’s Sports Bar, 200 Travis St.

200 Travis Street, that bright blue nook at the corner of Travis and Spring Street, opens for business Monday, Nov. 11 as Anthony’s Sports Bar.

The brainchild of owner Anthony Burns, the sports bar features much more than sports alone. The menu contains a wide array of everything from Southern comfort appetizers (beer- battered onion rings, fried pickles, bacon cheese fries) to lunch and dinner entrees (BLT, giant hamburgers, chef salad ) to wings of every description, a children’s menu, desserts, drinks and specials. On top of it all are adult beverages and a lot of screens for sports-watching enjoyment.

Anthony Burns

In the restaurant business for 22 years, this is not Burns’ first rodeo. A graduate of Haughton High School, he owned his first Subway Sandwich shop on Hwy. 80 as a teenager, and moved from there to management at Wendy’s, Backyard Burgers and Shoney’s. He opened Little Anthony’s Cafe, the first restaurant owned by an African-American, on Memphis’ iconic Beale Street, and was also a partner in Beale Street’s Ground Zero Blues Club. From Memphis, he and wife Cheryl Guiden Burns, a native of Shreveport, moved to California to open yet another restaurant. When I asked him the theme of Anthony’s in Shreveport, he told me ‘it’s all about feel good food.’ Anthony knows that good food brings people but good food and entertainment keep them, and he intends for Anthony’s Sports Bar to have both. Karaoke, live music and deejay nights will be common evening themes.

Sherry Jefferson, Director of Operations

Burns does not plan to move back to the area to manage this restaurant, but has every confidence in the team he has put together to help him. He says the name of his LLC tells the story, the Winning and Focus Team, Inc. With winning and focus in mind, Burns has chosen a well-known player in the local restaurant scene to be his Director of Operations. Sherry Jefferson, most recently owner and operator of Sherry’s Diner in Stoner Hill- it of the amazing pork chops and banana pudding- will oversee the staff on a daily basis. Sherry is thrilled for the opportunity to be back  in the restaurant business. “I closed Sherry’s about 2 years ago and I’ve truly missed my customers. This journey I’m on will be a little different from Sherry’s but the taste and quality will be the same-EXCELLENT.” In the ‘small world’ category, after Burns interviewed multiple people and determine Sherry was his choice, he learned that Sherry and his wife Cheryl had been schoolmates while attending Captain Shreve High School. Sherry says the motto for Anthony’s is ‘You better go tell somebody.’ She can rest assured that if Anthony’s lives up to its promises of great food, service and atmosphere, a lot of people will be told almost instantly.
