We are one step closer to getting some additional color and greenery onto downtown sidewalks. If you’re not a gardener, you might not realize that all plant growing material isn’t created equally. The requirements for the wick-watered Earthplanter pots that are going to be deployed downtown is a peat-based medium, and the recommended brand is called Pro-Mix. Garrison’s Home and Garden Showplace on Greenwood Road was willing to allow us to order our Pro-Mix along with theirs, and our 175 cubic feet arrived this week. (Thank you, Sandi Walton and Garrison’s!)

Next Thursday, we’ll be able to show you what one of these big, beautiful containers looks like in the ‘wild’ on Texas Street and then more will be coming in early spring.

We so appreciate the support of our 2024 sponsors:

Earthplanters arriving at our shop.

The pots have arrived, courtesy a large transit truck and a pallet mover and the magic now will now be created by Shreveport Aquarium’s horticulturist, Tim Hoover. The pots will be installed, at least initially, in the 300 to 700 blocks of Texas St. In addition to regular maintenance and upkeep, twice a year DDA and its horticulturist partners will refresh each planter with seasonal plantings.

The DDA will be utilizing Earthplanters, an innovative self-watering container system that produces superior plant growth while reducing labor costs, fuel and water usage.

A one year sponsorship of a new Downtown Development Authority Earthplanter provides an opportunity to take an active role of proud temporary ownership in helping the downtown area get ‘greener.’ A $300 tax deductible sponsorship will cover two sets of plantings during the year (spring + fall).

If you are interested in sponsoring a DDA Earthplanter please download the application Here. If you have any questions about the Adopt-A-Pot sponsorship program, contact us at 318-222-7403.

Sponsors are not responsible for maintenance or upkeep of the container. The individual, family or organization will receive a customized plaque showcasing their name or company name in each container that is sponsored, as well as confirmation of plaque placement and location once it has been placed.

Thank you for your support in the ‘greening’ of downtown!
