Shreveport, LA — The Shreveport Symphony Orchestra (SSO) announces Todd Simmons as its new Chief Executive Officer. Simmons will lead efforts to deepen community engagement, expand partnerships, and further establish the Symphony as a cultural and economic force in the region. With more than three decades of demonstrated artistic leadership, executive management, and audience connection, Simmons brings a rare blend of musical expertise and business acumen to the Shreveport-Bossier area.

Most recently, Simmons served as Executive Director of the New Orleans American Italian Cultural Center and previously held executive leadership roles with the Jefferson Performing Arts Society and Opera Naples. During his nine years as Executive Director of the New Orleans Opera, one of the region’s leading performing arts organizations, the Opera increased visibility, broadened audiences, and strengthened financial sustainability.

At the core of Simmons’ leadership philosophy is the belief that arts organizations thrive when they are fully embedded in the communities they serve. Under his guidance, education programs expanded their reach, cross-sector partnerships generated collaborative programming, and innovative initiatives drew new and returning audiences—reflecting a consistent focus on access and engagement.

“I am extremely pleased to be joining the Shreveport Symphony,” said Simmons. “It has so much talent and untapped opportunities, and I am eager to begin building bridges to every part of the Shreveport-Bossier region.”

“Todd brings the forward-thinking leadership we need now,” said incoming Board President Chris Farrell. “He pairs a strong artistic foundation with deep financial expertise. With his MBA degree and experience teaching nonprofit finance, he understands what is necessary to build a sustainable arts organization while increasing community involvement.”

Music Director Michael Butterman emphasized the importance of Simmons’ perspective as both an artist and an executive. “Todd understands both artistic and operational matters,” said Butterman. “He knows that artistic excellence is fundamental to our mission, and he shares our priorities of strengthening community ties and expanding our regional impact.”

Simmons’ background reflects that balance. In addition to his executive leadership, he spent thirteen years with the San Diego Opera as Chorus Master and Assistant Conductor and remains active as a musician and educator. He holds a Master of Music degree from Indiana University and a Master of Business Administration degree from San Diego State University. His position as an adjunct professor at the University of New Orleans, where he taught nonprofit finance, brings both academic and real-world financial leadership to his work.

Looking ahead, Simmons’ appointment signals a renewed commitment to connecting audiences, artists, educators, and industry partners, thus ensuring that the Symphony continues to serve as a vital and accessible resource for the entire community.
