For three years the first Wednesday of every month has been Downtown Artwalk day. 2020 is bringing a change requested by the many people who still dedicate their Wednesdays to church services. Starting in March, Artwalk will return the first THURSDAY of each month, from 5-8 pm. 2020’sa dates are: Thursday, March 5, April 2, May 7, June 4, July 2, August 6, Sept. 3, Oct. 1 and Nov. 5. December is still a wildcard…we will let you know that date as it gets closer.

The DDA, along with help of Mischa Farrell, Artwalk’s ‘architect in residence’, has brought the skills of the Louisiana Architectural Foundation (LAF) and American Institute of Architects (AIA)- Louisiana Chapter to the table with the fun (and educational) Sketch the City opportunity. Each Artwalk, Mischa explains architectural terms and gets into the nitty-gritty on how downtown buildings were constructed, then allows guests to try their hand at architectural sketching. It has been a hit! In addition is a History in Five talk the features the stories and spaces of downtown, cool venues and lots of art and artists!

Each month is in a downtown ‘zone’, created to make the artwalk, well, walkable! These zones feature all sorts of stops aimed at giving you a look at the huge variety of downtown buildings and architectural styles. Each building hosts artists, exhibits, musicians or food and drink specials especially created for artwalk.

Want to keep up with artwalk or know more? ‘Like’ the DDA’s Facebook page and stay on the lookout for our monthly event pages. We also share updated information right here on our artwalk page.

Artwalk is free to attend and all-ages appropriate. There are occasionally over-21 bars on the artwalk, but most of the stops have no age restrictions. On street parking is free starting at 5 pm, and our special artwalk maps created for each event also point out additional off-street parking options. We’re looking forward to seeing you downtown at an artwalk on a First Thursday in 2020!
