Granted, while a pot might not be as cute as a puppy, it also won’t tinkle on your carpet or chew up your new shoes. In the next couple of months, beautiful Earthplanter pots will begin showing up on selected corners on Texas Street as part of test program to gauge how the plants thrive/survive. If the results and response is good, we will roll them out to other selected areas.

Many communities across the country with milder climates have long had hanging plants and pots filled with seasonal color, but our need for daily watering has been a challenge.

Earthplanter pots are commercial grade, self-watering pots that contain a reservoir for water, which means crews need only refill every several days instead of daily. Cities with similar climates such as San Antonio, Sherman, Waxahachie, & Weatherford, Texas, and Franklin, La., have used Earthplanters with good results.

We are also thrilled to have the help of Shreveport Aquarium horticulturist Tim Hoover as our point person in determining the plants that will be the most well suited to the sometimes-harsh downtown environment.

Hoover has created a beautiful, green environmental at the aquarium using a variety of locally- hearty plants and shrubs and we know his skills will shine on the streets of downtown Shreveport.
