DeLoss McGraw explores his Oklahoma roots and his deep admiration for another artist in his series of paintings, Following Woody. Both McGraw and Guthrie grew up in Okemah, and McGraw came of age perceiving the ambivalence of his hometown toward the famed singer/songwriter. The imagery in the paintings, evoking Marc Chagall’s famed painting of a fiddler on a roof, alludes to Guthrie’s marginalized status. And like Guthrie, McGraw went elsewhere to realize his work and to become widely recognized as an artist.
