Shreveport, LA – The Shreveport Regional Jazz Ensemble (SRJE), an esteemed musical ensemble renowned for their captivating jazz performances, is delighted to announce their upcoming event, “Big Band Jazz – Keeping It Alive,” taking place on May 25 at Caddo Common Park, located in the vibrant Shreveport Common district. This dynamic jazz extravaganza promises an unforgettable evening of soulful melodies and infectious rhythms.
Founded in 1980 under the leadership of the esteemed Mr. Louis C. Wells, Sr., the Shreveport Regional Jazz Ensemble has been at the forefront of preserving and promoting the artistry of jazz. Supported by the exceptional talents of Mr. Cleveland White and Mr. Donald Walters, the SRJE is comprised of eighteen skilled musicians and two gifted vocalists. These musicians include current and retired band directors, string teachers, and esteemed professional musicians from the region.
The SRJE boasts an impressive lineup of accomplished musicians, each selected based on their extensive professional experiences and musical expertise. Among the notable members are Mr. Malcolm Spencer, Retired Assistant Band Director of the World Famed Grambling State University Marching Band; Mr. Tom Yates, Former Featured Saxophone Soloist for the Legendary Percy Sledge Band; and Mr. Michael Hendrix, Director of Symphonic Band at Grambling State University. With a collective experience of over 350 years of educational contributions, the musicians have positively impacted countless students and audiences throughout the ARK-LA-TEX region.
“Big Band Jazz – Keeping It Alive” is made possible through the generous support of the Louisiana Project Grants, overseen by the Shreveport Regional Arts Council. The Louisiana Project Grants program empowers artists, nonprofit arts organizations, schools, and local government agencies to develop arts projects that address the unique needs of their communities. By cultivating innovative arts projects, this program aims to make a lasting impact in each region of the state.
